The Enfield Liberal Democrats today greeted the New Year with optimism. In 2018, a year in which liberalism faced challenges on all fronts both nationally and internationally, your local Liberal Democrat team kept on fighting and went from strength to strength.
In the local elections in May, we almost tripled our vote share and ran candidates throughout the borough.
In the November by-election in Bush Hill Park, we were one of only two parties to increase our vote share and proved we are here to stay as a campaigning force in Enfield.
We have held many community events throughout the year. Our weekly Lib Days Group provides an informal place to meet up, chat, debate, and campaign. Our summer quiz event was a tremendous success, raising over £500 for our campaigns. And former MP Sarah Olney and former Parliamentary candidate Lucy Salek addressed us at our annual general meeting in November.
Across London, we were the only party to gain control of new councils in the local election. We also selected our candidates for London Assembly and London Mayor. Siobhan Benita, our Mayoral candidate, will provide an alternative for Londoners fed up with “tired two-party politics”, and will lead a diverse list of Assembly candidates from all backgrounds and all over London.
As 2019 begins, the Enfield Liberal Democrats remain committed to providing a liberal voice for Enfield and working on issues that matter. We will work on tackling violent crime, fixing the housing crisis, making the council listen to local residents, and helping make a greener, more tolerant, more welcoming borough. We wish everyone a happy 2019!
